anstoßen
to toast, to clink glasses
Pronunciation
/ˈan.ʃtoː.sn̩/
Cultural Note
When toasting in Germany, you must make eye contact with each person as you clink glasses — failing to do so supposedly brings seven years of bad luck (or bad intimate life, depending on who tells the tale). 'Prost!' (cheers, for beer) and 'Zum Wohl!' (to your health, for wine) are the standard toasting words.
📝 Example Sentences
