Cultural Note

'Guten Abend' is used from about 6 PM onward. It is the standard greeting when entering a restaurant, theater, or social gathering in the evening. Unlike English, Germans rarely say 'Good night' (Gute Nacht) as a greeting — it is only used when going to bed.
