Kindergarten
kindergarten, preschool, nursery school
Pronunciation
/ˈkɪndɐˌɡaʁtn̩/
Cultural Note
Literally 'children's garden,' coined by German educator Friedrich Fröbel in 1840. He envisioned children as plants that need nurturing in a garden-like environment. The concept was so revolutionary that the German word was adopted unchanged into English and many other languages. In Germany, Kindergarten typically covers ages 3–6.
