Cultural Note

In Germany, Trauzeugen are legal witnesses to the marriage and must sign the marriage certificate. Since 1998, they are optional for civil ceremonies but remain customary. The female equivalent is Trauzeugin (maid of honor). Unlike in English-speaking countries, there is typically only one Trauzeuge per spouse.
