Cultural Note

The pan-Latin American word for 'cool' that works from Venezuela to Ecuador to Colombia to Puerto Rico. It's possibly the most widely understood Latin American slang word. Some etymologists trace it to an African language via Caribbean slave trade, possibly Yoruba. It's invariable in gender, which makes it easy to use. '¡Chévere!' by itself is a complete, enthusiastic response to good news. Not used in Spain, Mexico, or Argentina, who each have their own words for 'cool.'
