Ir is one of the most irregular verbs in Spanish. Notably, its preterite forms (fui, fuiste, fue...) are identical to those of ser — context always makes the meaning clear. 'Ir a + infinitive' is the most common way to express the near future: 'Voy a comer' (I'm going to eat).
