joder
fuck / damn / to screw up
Pronunciation
/xoˈðeɾ/
Cultural Note
The F-word of Spanish, but used with far less stigma. Spaniards drop 'joder' casually in conversations that English speakers would consider far too polite for profanity — at dinner with friends, at the office, even on TV before 10 PM. '¡No me jodas!' (don't f*** with me / you're kidding) is the standard response to surprising news. '¡Joder!' alone is pure frustration. 'Estoy jodido' means 'I'm screwed.' It's universal across the Spanish-speaking world, but Spain uses it most liberally.
