In Spanish, all nouns have grammatical gender, and the article must match. Most nouns ending in -a are feminine (la casa, la mesa), and most ending in -o are masculine (el libro, el coche), but there are many exceptions: 'el día' (the day) is masculine, 'la mano' (the hand) is feminine. Learning the article with each noun is essential.
