Pronunciation

/o/

💡

Cultural Note

Like 'y' changing to 'e,' the conjunction 'o' changes to 'u' before words beginning with 'o-' or 'ho-': 'siete u ocho' (seven or eight), 'minutos u horas' (minutes or hours). In older Spanish orthography, 'o' between numbers carried an accent (ó) to avoid confusion with zero, but this rule was eliminated by the RAE in 2010.
