Stands for 'mort de rire' — literally 'dead from laughing.' This is the French LOL, and just like LOL, nobody who types it is actually laughing. It's used in texts, social media, and chat to indicate something is funny (or to awkwardly fill silence). The upgraded version is 'ptdr' (pété de rire = busting up laughing).
