Cultural Note
The gondola is Venice's iconic flat-bottomed boat, handcrafted from 280 pieces of eight different types of wood. Only about 400 gondolas remain today, compared to thousands in the 18th century. By tradition, gondolas must be painted black. Each gondola is slightly asymmetrical, curving to the left to counterbalance the gondolier rowing on the right.
