il conto
the check, the bill
Beginner Noun Masculine
🔊
Pronunciation
/il ˈkonto/
💡
Cultural Note
In Italy, the waiter will never bring the check unless you ask for it -- leaving a table is your choice, and rushing diners out is considered extremely rude. Saying 'Il conto, per favore' is the standard way. Splitting the bill ('fare alla romana' -- to do it Roman-style) is common among friends but less so on dates, where one person typically pays.
📝 Example Sentences
