Cultural Note

Divorce was only legalized in Portugal in 1975, after the Carnation Revolution. In Brazil, divorce was legalized in 1977. Both countries were among the last in Europe and the Americas to allow divorce, largely due to Catholic Church influence. Today, divorce rates in both countries have risen significantly, and it carries little social stigma.
