mil

one thousand

Pronunciation

/miw/

Cultural Note

Like Spanish, Portuguese does not use 'um' before 'mil': you say 'mil' not 'um mil.' Brazilian Portuguese uses a period as the thousands separator and a comma for decimals: 1.000 = one thousand, 1,50 = one point five. This is the opposite of the American English convention and a frequent source of confusion.

📝 Example Sentences

A cidade tem cinquenta mil habitantes.

The city has fifty thousand inhabitants.

Mil desculpas!

A thousand apologies!
