obrigado
thank you (said by a male)
Pronunciation
/o.bɾiˈɡa.du/ (BR) /o.bɾiˈɡa.du/ (PT)
Cultural Note
Portuguese is one of the few languages where 'thank you' changes based on the gender of the speaker — not the listener. A man says 'obrigado' and a woman says 'obrigada'. The word literally means 'obliged'. Adding 'muito' (very) before it intensifies the gratitude.
