Cultural Note
Portuguese and most Brazilian cuisine is not traditionally spicy, but Bahian food is the major exception, using malagueta peppers and pimenta-de-cheiro extensively due to African and indigenous influences. In the rest of Brazil, 'pimenta' (hot pepper sauce) is offered as a condiment, not cooked into the food. Portuguese food rarely features heat.
