Rechnung

bill / check

Beginner Noun Feminine

Pronunciation

/ˈʁɛçnʊŋ/

💡

Cultural Note

In Germany, you must ask for the bill — it won't be brought automatically. Saying 'Zahlen bitte!' or 'Die Rechnung bitte!' signals the waiter. Splitting the bill ('getrennte Rechnungen') is completely normal and not considered rude. Many smaller restaurants still prefer cash (Bargeld).

📝 Example Sentences

Die Rechnung bitte!

The check please!

Können wir getrennte Rechnungen haben?

Can we have separate checks?

Kann ich mit Karte zahlen, oder nur bar?

Can I pay by card, or only cash?
