perreo
reggaeton dancing / grinding (dance style)
Pronunciation
/peˈre.o/
Cultural Note
From 'perro' (dog) + '-eo' suffix, 'perreo' is the signature dance style of reggaeton — close-contact, hip-grinding dancing that scandalized parents across Latin America when it emerged from Puerto Rico in the early 2000s. 'Perrear' (the verb) went from being considered vulgar to becoming a mainstream cultural phenomenon. Bad Bunny, Daddy Yankee, and J Balvin made perreo a global export. 'Perreo hasta el suelo' (perreo down to the floor) is a classic reggaeton phrase. What was once considered scandalous is now just... Saturday night.
